Sesmas convicted of killing Wichita mom, kidnapping her baby

WICHITA, Kan. (KWCH) — A Sedgwick Co. jury convicted the woman who was accused of killing a Wichita mother, then kidnapping her baby Tuesday.

A day after the trial wrapped up, jurors found Yesenia Sesmas guilty of first-degree murder and kidnapping for the November 2016 attack.

Prosecutors said Sesmas shot and killed Laura Abarca, 27, and abducted her newborn, Sophia. Sesmas was captured in Texas three days after the slaying.

Sesmas' lawyers had argued she did not plan the killing and, if she had, she would have taken steps to conceal it. They were urging jurors to consider a lesser charge than first-degree murder. They contended if she planned to murder Abarca, she would have driven a different vehicle, among other things, to hide her crime.
