WICHITA, Kan. (WIBW) — Many Republican voters are in for a confusing surprise when they head to the ballot box this fall. So far, they have two candidates for Congress to choose from - but only one name they can pick.
That's right. There's currently only one person challenging incumbent Rep. Ron Estes for his seat in Congress and that man's name is: Ron Estes.
According to the full list of 2018 primary candidates on the Secretary of State's website, both Republicans who filed for the 4th district seat have the same first and last name. The only difference is the challenger has his middle initial, M., included in his name.
"This is clearly an attempt to deceive Kansas voters,” Rep. Ron Estes spokesman Josh Bell told the Wichita Eagle.
While the incumbent Ron Estes' website looks like your normal candidate's homepage, complete with a large picture of the Congressman and his family near the top of the page, his opponent's site bears a giant logo calling him the "Real Ron Estes" and including a message about voters wanting change.
"I believe Kansas Republicans deserve a Rep. Ron Estes who will show up and represent Fourth District Kansans," it reads.
