EMPORIA, Kan. (WIBW) — A teenager who was found suffering from a gunshot wound made up his story about being shot by someone else and, in fact, accidentally shot himself, the Emporia Police Dept. said.
Investigators say the teen, Kenneth Hopkins, and two unnamed 16-year-olds were at a home in the 500 block of Exchange Street early Tuesday morning, "messing around" with a shotgun.
Even though it had a gunlock, the single-shot, break over 20 gauge shotgun went off, hitting Hopkins in the hand. Police say the 18-year-old was handling the gun when it went off. The rest of the shot went into the ceiling.
Investigators say Hopkins hand was wrapped up and he and one of the teens left the house. They walked a short distance and called 911, where officers found them in the 200 block of W. 6th Ave. They made up a story about Hopkins being shot to avoid getting in trouble.
The Emporia Police Dept. says they are investigating the incident as an accidental shooting and will forward reports to the Lyon Co. Attorney who will decide whether or not to press any charges.
