TOEPKA, Kan. (WIBW) -- After more than 30 years in the Capitol City, a Mexican restaurant will close its doors for good Friday night.
Pepe & Chela's Cantina's quietly announced it would close Friday night at 9 p.m., an employee told 13 NEWS. The restaurant, located at 10th & Tyler, opened in 1986.
The owners posted a comment onto Facebook thanking "each and every one of you for allowing us to serve you for the last 31 years."
"My parents and I started Pepe and Chela’s in 1986 as a new (beginning) for our family. We never imagined in my wildest dream it would be as successful as it was," they continued. "Thank you again Topeka for (a) wonderful 31 years."
The post was signed by Olga Smith, Jose Avila, Chela Avila, and Jesus Garcia. They said they made the decision after an opportunity came for Jesus that he couldn't pass up.
"We contemplated getting a new owner, but after lots of discussions with my parents and my family we decided it time to let it go," they added.
When it first opened, Pepe & Chela's was located at 507 SW Tyler, according to a sign on the wall.
Initially, a few regulars were given a heads up about the impending closure, one of whom reached out to 13 NEWS' Eric Ives in order to get the word out.
