TOPEKA (WIBW)-- The Newton community remembered a mother and daughter found dead inside their home.

Friends, family and strangers held a vigil and balloon release for Alyssa Runyon and Zaylynn Paz near their family home.

Authorities say 24 year-old Alyssa was found strangled and four-year-old Zaylynn was stabbed multiple times.

Everyone in attendance Friday wore pink and orange ribbons, Alyssa's favorite colors.

Newton Police say the two were killed by 19 year-old Keith Hawkins.

Family and friends say they will remember Alyssa as doting mother and Zaylynn as a ray of sunshine.

"It means a lot I see a lot of love, I see a lot of care in this town. They came together for us and I want to tell everybody I appreciate that you came out and give us the love and support we had wanted and we got it," Alyssa's Aunt Penny said.

Hawkins was booked into the Harvey County Jail Friday afternoon on charges of capital murder and first-degree premeditated murder.

He was arrested in Texas Tuesday evening, several hours after Runyon and daughter, Zaylynn were found dead in their home.

Texas authorities dropped charges stemming from a chase that led to Hawkins' arrest, so that he could be extradited back to Kansas.

His bond is two and a half million dollars.
