TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - Another sign of renewal in Downtown Topeka, love birds have a new romantic dining option there.
Topeka's newest fine dining restaurant had its grand opening on Thursday.
The White Linen restaurant creates a culinary experience in a unique setting its owners say Topeka was lacking.
"We sold out our first three nights Thursday, Friday, and Saturday we're completely booked up,” owner and head chef Adam VanDonge said.
Keeping the old Knox bank decor, The White Linen, inside the historic Columbian building, aims to be more than a restaurant.
"It just brings a fine dining restaurant that’s based off of experience, more than experience, good food, and just a nice romantic night out,” VanDonge said.
Guests are greeted with a complimentary glass of champagne, and immediately immersed in classical music, and elegant décor when they walk in the door.
"I think they've been wowed, I think they leave here thinking that they never thought this was possible to be in Topeka, and we are bringing something very special to Topeka with this restaurant,” VanDonge said.
The dining area has room for 26, but the best seat in the house is at the chef’s private table in the back vault built in 1888.
"It's rented out each night. It can serve two, four, or six people, and the vault is a little different than the normal sitting area, the vault you get to try everything on the menu, I'm your waiter all night, so it’s just something special,” VanDonge said.
The White Linen is the first of several new restaurants slated to open downtown , and VanDonge is happy to join the rebirth.
"I really wanted to start something in Topeka, because I see what's going on downtown , and I'm very excited about all the other things that are coming to downtown, and I want to be a part of that,” VanDonge said.
The White Linen is open Wednesday through Saturday from 5 to 9 p.m. and it is reservation only.
