TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) -- A Topeka council member will soon take center-stage during city council meetings.
With all of the precincts reporting, 5th district representative Michelle De La Isla defeated Spencer Duncan in the race for mayor, 51% to 48%. The vote tally was 8167 for De la Isla and 7719 for Duncan.
De La Isla will replace outgoing Mayor Larry Wolgast on January 8, 2018. Wolgast chose not to seek re-election.
De La Isla currently works for Westar Energy as Diversity and Inclusion Representative, and previously served as executive director for Topeka Habitat for Humanity. A key difference during the campaign centered on whether she would keep her job, with De La Isla saying the mayor's job is 24/7 and she has long proven herself to be a capable multi-tasker.
Duncan countered that he was the only candidate who pledged to be a full-time mayor. He was a political newcomer who runs his own consulting business and previously worked in journalism.
