TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) — A Shawnee Co. jury convicted a Topeka man for a 2016 murder in East Topeka.

On Friday, De'Angelo Megel Martinez was found guilty of first-degree murder, among other charges, in the drive-by shooting death of Brian Miller, Shawnee Co. District Attorney Mike Kagay said.

Miller was shot and killed on April 8, 2016, in the 2000 block of SE Echo Ridge Circle. He was found in the road and rushed to a local hospital where he later died. Martinez was caught more than a month later in Oklahoma.

Martinez is the second person convicted in connection with Miller's death. In December, Christopher Patillo, Jr., was given a life sentence after being found guilty of 1st degree murder as well for his role in the killing. Prosecutors said Martinez shot Miller from a van driven by Patillo.

His conviction wrapped up a five day trial, Kagay said. In addition to the murder charge, he was also found guilty of criminal discharge of a firearm at an occupied dwelling, aggravated assault, and aggravated endangering of a child. He faces a potential life sentence and is scheduled to learn his fate on May 4, 2018.
