TOPEKA (WIBW)-- The Manhattan man convicted in the death of an infant over two years ago, was sentenced Thursday to life in prison.

The Manhattan Mercury reports 28 year-old Andrew Gibson will not be eligible for parole for 25 years.

He was convicted of first degree murder for the May 2016 death of three-month old Serenity Reich.

The Mercury reports Gibson also received an additional term of nearly three-years for child abuse against Reich.

Authorities said Gibson told them he hadn't slept for two days on the night of Serenity's death.

After he finally fell asleep, Gibson said her cries woke him up and he forced her head into a mattress.
