TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - The Kansas Highway Patrol has some tips if you plan on traveling for Thanksgiving.

Make sure your vehicle is in good working order. Check tire tread depth and air pressure, along with your vehicles fluid, exhaust system and other mechanical equipment.

Your vehicle should be stocked with items in case you are in a crash or have mechanical failure. Make sure to bring bottled water, blankets, non-perishable food, a first aid kit and a flashlight.

Make sure you plan your travel route and let other people know in case of a crash or mechanical problems.

Charge your cell phone before you leave and dress for the weather.

And check your route of travel for road conditions or construction before you leave.

You can call KDOT's 511 hot line to check out road conditions before you leave.
