BUTLER COUNTY, Kan. (WIBW) -- Butler Co. Sheriff Kelly Herzet confirms Lewis Mitchell, an escapee from the Winfield Correctional Facility, is now in police custody.

According to Herzet, a Butler Co. deputy saw Mitchell hitchhiking along Highway 77. When the deputy approached the suspect, he ran into a corn field.

KWCH reports Mitchell told the deputy he would not be taken alive, prompting the deputy to call out tracking dogs, a helicopter, and drones to aid in the search.

The Kansas Dept. of Corrections says Mitchell escaped from the facility around 11 p.m. Tuesday. He was serving a 27-month sentence on a burglary conviction out of Sedgwick Co.
