Influenza A leaves 7-year-old Iowa boy in fight for his life

WAUKEE, Iowa (KWCH/KCRG) -- A 7-year-old boy is fighting for his life after being diagnosed with the flu.

The boy was rushed to the emergency room when his mother noticed his symptoms had worsened.

"We thought we were losing him. Even the doctor didn't think he was going to make it," says Melody Ridout.

Ridout says her son's doctors said Jaxson had a viral infection that led to septic shock and respiratory failure. He is currently in a medically induced coma while a ventilator helps him breath.

Jaxon has been sedated since Friday, but his mother says she started to see small movements in the past 24 hours. His family did confirm to KCCI that Jaxson opened his eyes Tuesday evening for the first time since being placed in a medically induced coma.

“Yeah, I'm talking to him, and I feel like his presence is here, but I don't know,” she said. “They're telling me it is. But I don't know -- you know what I mean? But, when I see these responses. I know he's fighting for us. He's fighting."

Jaxon's mother says he was born premature with weak lungs, along with other health issues. Nevertheless, she never anticipated her son’s flu diagnosis would be so severe

Now, Ridout is asking for prayers as Jaxson continues to receive treatment in the pediatric intensive care unit.
