TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) — Investigators are still trying to determine what sparked a central Topeka house fire that shut down a stretch of SW 17th Street, near Washburn University.
They were not able to determine the cause during the preliminary investigation, the Topeka Fire Dept. said.
Firefighters were called to the home, in the 1500 block of SW 17th Street, just before 1 p.m. As they pulled up, they could see smoke and flames coming from the first floor of the three-story structure. In order to fight the blaze, emergency crews needed to shut down 17th St. from SW Washburn Ave. and SW Mulvane Street.
Firefighters say no one was found inside the house. They estimated the fire did about $25,000 in damages to the wood-framed home.
Investigators are asking anyone with information about the fire to contact Crime Stoppers at 785-234-0007.
