FORK IN THE ROAD: Homestyle cooking at Tammy's Billard Cafe

TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW)-- Many people may have not heard of Tammy's Billard Cafe. The restaurant is a hidden treasure nestled in the middle of Billard Municipal Airport. However, owner Tammy Bailey wants the world to know about her homestyle cooking.

"It's a best kept secret and I don't want to be a secret," Bailey said.

The restaurant has been in Topeka for decades, serving staples including open roast beef sandwiches, biscuits and gravy, and pancakes that are larger than life.

Bailey says her cafe is just like eating at your grandma's house.

"It's home cooking, down home cooking," Bailey said. "Not much diet stuff that's for sure, but we do try to accommodate. We do have a salad bar!"

Customers who frequent the cafe says whatever their taste for the day, the menu is sure to satisfy.

"I like a lot of gravy on my biscuits and you get it here," customer John Edington said.

Customers also enjoy the friendly atmosphere.

"It's a nice little place to come, you could sit here all day if you want," customer Rick Reser said.

Bailey says one thing keeps people coming back to her cafe: fried chicken.

"People love it," she said. "It's fried chicken!"

Bailey says the customer favorite is hand-breaded and fried fresh daily.

But Tammy's Billard Cafe is more than about food.

"We all miss each other," she said. "The elderly when they're not coming in, even the younger ones that have not been here, it's just family."

And whether customers are just landing out of the air, or looking for a great place to eat on the ground, Bailey says everyone will be greeted with open arms and a full plate.

"I was taught that job worth doing is doing right, so, same with cooking," she said.

Tammy's Billard Cafe is located on 3600 NE Sardou Ave, and is open daily from 7:00am-2:00pm.
