Diabetic man finds relief in his feet through reflexology therapy

TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) --- Many people try massage therapy to reduce stress or work out kinks, but there's another therapy on the table that restores balance, circulation and much more using only your hands and feet.

In this week's To Your Health 13 NEWS takes a look at how reflexology therapy is helping one man keep a leg up on diabetes.

Curtis is one of 29 million Americans who suffer from diabetes, but he has found relief at the Still Point Massage and Bodywork Studio in Topeka, 2709 W. 29th St.

To help Curtis Owner and massage therapist Deb Johnson uses reflexology therapy - where the focus is on the feet.

"Reflexology is a technique in which therapists either work with the feet or the hands and the areas on either the feet or the hands corresponds with different parts of the body," Deb said.

With curtis and other clients battling diabetes Deb spends most her time working the middle of the foot - the area that affects the liver and pancreas.

"I can feel where she's pushing and it feels uh, just relief," Curtis said.

But clients who receive reflexology therapy also feel relief from a number of different issues like circulation, digestive, back, stress, anxiety and more.

"...and then the great toe - working that specifically can help with headache pain," Deb said.

Some may think this technique is too good to be true, but deb says once you try it, you'll feel a difference.

"It's really fun to see the skeptic turn into the convert, if you will," Deb said.

Reflexology is also used when a body part, such as your back or hip, is too tender to touch. Working the reflex on the hand or foot that correlates with that area is a good way to slowly push back the pain.

"and if there's something bothering me, I'll tell her," Curtis said.

While each 30 minute session is specific to the client, the goals stay the same - increase relaxation to decrease stress and allow the client's body to get back into equilibrium or homeostasis.

"I think we all want to be balanced and reflexology can help with that," Deb said.

Deb says balance in the body is the key to a happier and healthier life even when you haven't been dealt the best hand.

"It feels very good and as soon as you guys leave I'm going to make an appointment to come back and see her again," Curtis said.
