Deserving people in need receive cars through Washburn Tech program

TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - The lives of two deserving people just got a whole lot easier, with a little help from Washburn Tech and its students.

Washburn Tech's Recycled Rides program gave away their 19th and 20th vehicles Tuesday to local people in need.

The Recycled Rides program partners auto service and auto collision students with instructors and professional mentors to refurbish vehicles, which are then donated. Local businesses and individuals also donate parts and supplies to get the vehicles on the road again.

One woman says she is appreciative because her refurbished car, a 2011 Chevy Malibu, will help get her son, who had medical needs, to his doctors appointments in Kansas City.

"I'm just thankful and grateful for everything that the community has done to put everything together and the donations that have been provided," Meghann Chaudhry said. "And for the students, especially, to have been able to put the vehicles together."

In addition to the cars, the recipients also received a bag full of car care products and a first oil change and check-up.
