Topeka crews investigating vacant house fire near WU Tech

TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) -- Topeka Fire crews dealt with a house fire in the 5800 block of SW Huntoon.

Authorities say it was first reported around 8:40 p.m. Sunday. This is located close to Washburn Tech's main campus.

Firefighters say they noticed smoke and flames coming from the first floor. They were able to quickly extinguish the fire, and confirmed the house was vacant -- nobody was hurt.

The Topeka Police Department tweeted that they shut down the eastbound and westbound lanes of the street as the fought the fire.

Crews left the scene about an hour later.

Officials say the fire was intentionally set, with an estimated dollar loss of $5,000. They continue investigating, and ask anyone with helpful information to call Crimestoppers at (785) 234-0007.
