Concordia police officer killed in motorcycle crash

CONCORDIA, Kan. (KWCH) -- The Concordia Police Department is mourning the loss of one of its own following a deadly crash in Ottawa County Monday afternoon.

The Kansas Highway Patrol says around 2:45 p.m. multiple vehicles were involved in the crash on US-81.

KHP says some vehicles had stopped for a man who was hitchhiking in the middle of the road.

They say, Officer Marc Henry, who was off-duty at the time, was riding his motorcycle when he tried to stop but ended up rear-ending one of the vehicles.

Henry was taken to the hospital and where he died from his injuries.

"We are deeply saddened at the loss of a great colleague and friend. Our thoughts and prayers are with Marc's family, friends and colleagues," City Manager Amy Lange said in a statement Tuesday.

The Ottawa County Sheriff's Office says another person was injured in the crash and taken to the hospital in Salina for treatment.

The man who was walking the in the middle of the road, Calvin Stewart, was arrested for being an intoxicated pedestrian and second-degree murder.

Henry's funeral has been set for Friday, June 15 at 10 a.m. at the Brown Grand Theatre in downtown Concordia. The family has asked that those in attendance wear blue.
