Turkeys & Hams Needed To Help Feed Local Families

MANHATTAN, Kan. (WIBW) -- A local food pantry is asking for last minute donations to help feed the hungry in the Manhattan area this holiday season.

The Flint Hills Breadbasket distributes thousands of food baskets to Manhattan families in need over Thanksgiving and Christmas.

It's part of the Mayor's Holiday Food and Fund Drive, a community-wide fundraiser.

Holiday baskets will be filled on Sunday December 18th and distributed on Monday December 19th. The executive director of the facility, Maribeth Kieffer, says 150 turkeys and hams and evaporated milk are still greatly needed.

This year, Kieffer says demand is high for the food baskets.

"The need is a lot higher for 2011 than it was for 2010. In August, September, October and November- those four months- we have served over 4,000 more individuals than they did in those same four months in 2010," she told WIBW.

If you would like to help, you can drop food or donations off at the Flint Hills Breadbasket at 905 Yuma Street in Manhattan or you can make a purchase at a local grocery store and the Breadbasket's crew will come and pick it up.
