GEARY COUNTY, Kan. (WIBW) -- Every year, schools throughout Geary County and on Fort Riley take part in "Walk A Mile Day," an effort by the school district and Geary Community Healthcare Foundation to promote a healthy lifestyle.

On Thursday, October 4th, all elementary and middle school students in USD 475 and at Saint Xavier Catholic School took part in the event.

"Walking is probably the easiest thing you can do and we want them to learn that walking one mile does not take much or very long. I worry about our children being too much of the couch potatoes today," said
Jolana Montgomery-Matney, Executive Director of the Geary Community Healthcare Foundation. She expected 8,000 people to take part in the walk, covering 8,000 miles in total.

This year, the event carried special meaning. It was dedicated to Ron and Becky Bramlage and their four children- 15-year-old Brandon, 13-year-old Boston,11-year-old Beau and 8-year-old Roxanne. All six family members were killed in a plane crash in Florida this past June on their way home from vacation. The family was active in the community and school district.

"We still have a lot of students that are affected by it. Many kids talk about it often. We still have kids that just want to reminisce about the times they shared with their classmates," said Mary Wright, principal of Junction City Middle School.

"The Bramlage Family- Becky was president of the school board and very involved in the school district. All of the children were in school here and they were a very athletic family. They set an excellent example of being active and giving back to their community. It’s to honor the family and their legacy," Montgomery-Matney added.

Also in honor of the Bramlage family Thursday, a memorial was unveiled at Junction City Middle School. Four trees were planted in memory of each of the Bramlage children and a bench was placed beside them in remembrance of their parents- a tribute students and teachers will pass by each day.
