TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - Local boy scouts put on a patriotic display at the Kansas Statehouse for Independence Day.

Scouts turned out early Thursday morning to set up American flags around the state capitol building.

The project is a collaborative effort between the Jayhawk Area Council of Boy Scouts and the Topeka Public School District's Junior ROTC units. It started in 2010 in honor of the scouts' centennial. Then-USD 501 Superintendent Dr. Kevin Singer, who served on the Jayhawk council's board, came up with the idea as a service project.

The flags also are posted on other patriotic holidays, like Memorial Day and Veterans Day.
