May Marks National Stroke Awareness Month

From the Shawnee County Health Agency:

Every 40 seconds someone has a stroke. Every four minutes, someone dies from a stroke. May marks National Stroke Awareness Month and the Shawnee County Health Agency (SCHA) is working to inform
residents of steps they can take to reduce their risk of having a stroke.

High blood pressure is the number one modifiable risk factor to stroke.
By getting your blood pressure checked on a regular basis and helping to control your blood pressure if needed, you can reduce your chance of a stroke. According to the American Heart Association, 70 percent of the 5 million strokes that occur every year can be directly linked to high blood pressure.

The following warning signs are cause for concern:
o Numbness or weakness in any part of the body
o Trouble speaking or understanding conversation
o Sudden visual changes in one or both eyes
o Dizziness, sudden poor balance or unexplained falls
o Confusion or unexplained mood changes
o Loss of consciousness

If you are a stroke survivor, a family member of a stroke survivor or a caregiver to a stroke survivor, SCHA invites you to take part in our Stroke Support Group. The group meets on the first Friday of each month, at our main location, 1615 SW 8th. Blood pressure monitoring begins at 1:30 p.m. with the class starting at 2:00 p.m. Please call 291-2488 to confirm the meeting each month.

The group is able to provide information on medications, diets and provide support to members. A social worker runs the class, with a registered nurse available to answer medication questions that may arise.
All services through the Stroke Support Group are provided free of charge; however donations are accepted.

In addition free blood pressure checks are provided every third Friday of the month at our Central Park location, 1534 SW Clay. Blood pressures are taken from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. and are free of charge.

No appointment is necessary.
