MANHATTAN, Kan. – Sunset Zoo recently received $8,000 in support from two local businesses – Best Buy Co., Inc. and Tallgrass Brewing Co. The $4,000 grant award from Best Buy will expand the Zoo’s education outreach to local teens. The other $4,000 was a result of Tallgrass Brewing Co. and Friends of Sunset Zoo’s recent Brew at the Zoo fundraiser in support of the Zoo’s new Gibbons Exhibit.
“We’re continually thankful for the support we receive from the local community,” said Scott Shoemaker, Director. “Their investment allows us to inspire the conservation of our natural world through exciting guest experiences and quality education offerings.”
Sunset Zoo will utilize the Best Buy Community Grant award to give local teens access to opportunities through technology in an effort to support academic success, and develop life and leadership skills. The grant will enhance the Z.O.O. Crew program and develop an electronic tracking system to better monitor and evaluate the use of the Zoo’s education animal collection.
The Best Buy Community Grants Program is led by employee committees in each of the company’s eight territories across the United States. This year, Best Buy Children's Foundation will give $2 million through the Community Grants Program.
The funds from this year’s Brew at the Zoo will support the new John Woodard Memorial Gibbons Exhibit along the Asian Forest Trail. The new primate exhibit will feature indoor and outdoor public viewing, similar to the Zoo’s chimpanzee exhibit, and will open next spring.
Brew at the Zoo 2011 was another successful event with over 300 community members in attendance. Plans are already in place to continue the event during the summer or fall of 2012. Watch www.SunsetZoo.com for next year’s event date and other Zoo happenings.
