MANHATTAN, Kan. (WIBW) -- High school students from across Kansas were putting their skills to the test in Manhattan on Monday for a state-wide mechanics competition.
Manhattan Area Technical College hosted the annual Future Farmers of America Ag Mechanics contest jointly with Kansas State University.
The contest included 160 students from 39 Kansas high schools who competed in the areas of welding, electrical, small engine repair and irrigation systems.
The students were judged individually and there were also two team events, including a grain cart and tractor and engine diagnosis.
“The experience is fantastic. It looks like all of the students have been engaged all day long in each area that they’ve been participating in so the experience for them and us is very good,” Wes Chambers, welding instructor at Manhattan Area Technical College.
“It’s a lot of real life experience here. A lot of these skills you can use the rest of your life. I’d say it’s a very worthwhile contest for everybody,” added Derek Haug, a student at Manhattan High School.
The winners will move on to the national competition where a number of scholarships will be up for grabs.
Manhattan Area Technical College has hosted the event for several years as a result of the college’s partnership with Kansas State University’s Department of Communications and Agricultural Education as a hands-on trainer for the university’s students each semester.
Manhattan Area Technical College teaches welding, small engine repair and agricultural structures for Kansas State University throughout the year.
