TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) _ The Kansas State Historical Society is
offering a two-week program of archaeology training in June.
The dig is scheduled for June 4-19 in Pottawatomie County.
The historical society will join with the University of Kansas
and the Army Corps of Engineers to investigate the Coffey site,
located along the Big Blue River in the Flint Hills region of
Manhattan.
The Topeka Capital-Journal reports the site is on the National
Register of Historic Places. The work will help researchers
document the ways of hunter-gathers around 7,000 years ago.
Participants in the field school are expected to help salvage
vital archaeological information from the site.
