JUNCTION CITY, Kan. (WIBW) -- Members of the community filled the Courtyard by Marriott Convention Center Monday, January 21 at the annual community Martin Luther King Jr. Day celebration.

This year's theme was "Still Marching." It was the 28th year for the annual celebration which spanned two days.

"We have that theme because we believe that marching is something inclusive that everybody’s a part of, no matter what avocation you have in life, whatever it is that you’re doing in life you’re always marching toward more progress," said Larry Hicks, member of the MLK Jr. Committee.

Dr. Mildred Edwards, Executive Director of the Kansas African-American Affairs Commission, was the guest speaker at the event. She said each of us should be actively working to achieve Dr. King’s dream- equality and universal freedoms for all.

"He gave his life defending and protecting the civil and human rights of all people," she said.

The crowd was treated to a performance by the Geary County Children"s Choir ad the Wiley College “A Cappella Choir” from Marshall, Texas.

The choir is known for its recorded excerpts of music used in the soundtrack of “The Great Debaters,” the 2008 film directed by and starring highly acclaimed actor Denzel Washington. The film traces the inspiring true story of the Wiley University debate team’s victorious national debate championship over Harvard University in the mid-1930’s.

In addition, recognition was be given to community and civic organizations for their dedicated service to the community.

"The whole objective is to bring the community together. This is not something that is designated for the black community or the white community. It’s designated for all Americans to be a part of living the dream as a whole because democracy in and of itself is about all Americans," Hicks told WIBW.
