MANHATTAN, Kan. (WIBW) -- Your votes can help raise money for a Manhattan animal shelter selected to be a part of a nationwide program sponsored by Purina.
To help lower the number of cats who live in shelters, the Purina Cat Chow “50 Years. 50 Shelters.” program is supporting 50 cat-focused shelters nationwide by donating $200,000.
T. Russell Reitz Animal Shelter in Manhattan is one of the 50 shelters in the program and the only shelter selected in Kansas. Currently, this shelter has received $2,000 from Purina Cat Chow - a $1,000 custom care package and $1,000 cash donation made possible by community votes.
You can help T. Russell Reitz Animal Shelter earn an additional $1,000 by voting once a day at www.catchow.com/50shelters from today to June 14, 2013.* By voting, you can help raise a total of $50,000 for the 50 participating shelters. The donations will allow the shelters to purchase necessary items and supplies to help better serve their adoptable cats.
"Every vote will be a donation to the shelter to help the animals here. We would really appreciate your support and we’re very happy that Purina has chosen us. Many of our animals end up being therapy animals, health monitors and whatever you’re giving to the animals, you’re really giving back to the community and it’s money that readily available to help the animals," said Willie Davila, director of the T. Russell Reitz Animal Shelter.
"The cost of drugs for most shelters has gone up at least 18% in the past year so most of the donations we’re getting this year are going strictly for the health of the animals. Sometimes we find animals that are in dire need of healthcare and treatment and it’s always good to have that money there. There's also equipment that's needed," he added.
For every vote cast, Purina Cat Chow will donate $1, up to $1,000, until June 14 or until 25,000 cat people vote for their favorite shelter.
