JUNCTION CITY, Kan. -- Dr. Joe Stratton, CEO at Geary Community Hospital, is pleased to announce the signing of an additional general surgeon to the hospital staff. Dr. Mary Otoo of Syracuse, New York, will join Dr. Fouad Hachem and Dr. Charles Bollman in Flint Hills Surgical Clinic this summer. “Adding Dr. Otoo will help meet the demand for surgical services at Geary Community Hospital,” said Dr. Stratton. “We believe she and her family will integrate well into the community.”
Dr. Otoo received a Bachelor of Arts in Biology from Oberlin College in Oberlin, Ohio, in 2004 before beginning medical school at State University of New York (SUNY) Upstate Medical University in Syracuse, New York, also in 2004. She graduated in 2008 and immediately began a five-year residency.
She is currently a general surgical resident and chief resident at SUNY. She is certified in Advanced Trauma and Life Support, Advanced Cardiac and Life Support and Pediatric Advanced Life Support. Dr. Otoo is a member of the American College of Surgeons and the American Women College of Surgeons. Her honors include the Hope Hibbard Prize in Biology (Oberlin College), the Society of Sigma Xi, and the Bruce Farrel MD Award (SUNY). The latter award recognized her for showing true dedication to a medical career, the ability and willingness to teach and learn and the demonstration of maturity and leadership.
Her volunteer work included working at a free clinic for homeless and underprivileged populations of Syracuse and for the Community Health Partners of Lorain, Ohio.
Dr. Otoo and her husband, Kenneth Kolembe, a high school math teacher, have two children, ages one and five. Dr. Otoo enjoys traveling, squash, tennis and table tennis, while her husband is looking forward to fishing at Milford Lake.
