TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - The Silver Lake high school debate team is headed to New York City ...to compete for a 10 thousand dollar grand prize!
The team entered the 10th annual International Public Policy Forum competition for the first time last October and made it to the elite 8.
The Silver Lake high school debate team has New York City in its sights.
More than 350 teams registered to compete in the Bickel and Brewer International Public Policy Forum and Silver Lake is the only school from Kansas to be selected.
The IPPF contest gives high school students across the world the opportunity to participate in written and oral debates on public policy issues.
The four seniors and two juniors submitted an essay titled, "Nato Military Operations in Afghanistan are not justified."
Now they'll debate the topic in person.
The team has written a total of nearly 30 essays throughout the entire process.
Schools from Mongolia, Korea, California, Colorado, and Missouri are also a part of the elite 8 headed to NYC.
