TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - After 14 years of analog radios in Shawnee County emergency responders are proposing an upgrade but it comes with a hefty price.

Dangerous weather has hit much of Kansas and emergency responders say this is exactly why Shawnee County needs to replace the 800 megahertz analog simulcast radio system to digital at nearly an 18 million dollar cost.

The current system is 14 years old and failed twice last year. The new system would be used by all emergency responders in Shawnee County plus, it would allow local responders to tie in with state communications systems.

Big question at the Shawnee County Commissioners meeting Thursday morning will be who will pay the 18 million dollar bill for the upgrade and how.
