MANHATTAN, Kan. (WIBW) -- It was a night on the town for a group of Fort Riley wives during an event designed to take their minds off the stress of having their husbands deployed.

The Manhattan Chamber Military Relations Committee hosted a “Yellow Ribbon Social Special Edition” on Tuesday, January 15, 2013. The "Yellow Ribbon Socials" meet twice monthly at varying locations in Manhattan. The program offers spouses of deployed or otherwise displaced soldiers an opportunity to bond, network and feel less alone during the stressful time of deployment/displacement.

The event Tuesday night was called “Proper Pin-ups”. A group of local businesses came together to give 15 members of the Yellow Ribbon Social Group an evening of fun and pampering. Each spouse had their hair and make-up done by a cosmetology student at Bellus Academy, then traveled to Harry’s Restaurant downtown to be photographed by a La Brisa photographer. They were decked out in true vintage “proper pin-up” attire courtesy of Rockstar & Rogers and Gypsy’s on the Boulevard. They also enjoyed treats and beverages at Harry’s.

Chelsea Moxlow's husband is currently deployed- their first deployment as a married couple. She was grateful for a night out.

"It’s exciting! I don’t really do this very often to be able to get hair and makeup done and then get dressed up, especially since my husband’s gone. I don’t get the chance to dress up and go out somewhere. I’ve been staying at home quite a bit so it’s fun to have a ladies night to dress up and have fun," she said.

"It’s been really difficult without him but at the same time, I’ve grown so much stronger as a woman and an individual and I also feel like our marriage has gotten stronger because we’ve had to really bump up our communication. The support that the Army brings and other people that I’ve met along the way really helps a lot too," she added.

Alejandra Weiss' husband has been deployed since May to Afghanistan. The mom of two was excited to have some "me" time.

"It's nice. I get a sitter and time for myself and time to just relax and have someone do my hair and makeup and some girl time so it's very nice. I'm very appreciative to everybody who sponsored this," she said.
