GEARY COUNTY, Kan. (WIBW) -- Fire crews from Geary County and Morris County battled a massive grass fire for hours Wednesday, protecting several homes that were in its path.

Officials say the fire started in Morris County around 1:20 PM and quickly spread north into Geary County, scorching an estimated 700 acres south of Junction City.

Firefighters from across the area- Geary County, Morris County, Dickinson County, White City, Fort Riley, Dwight, Delavan and Woodbine- fought the blaze into the evening to get it under control.

“Shortly after one o’clock we received a call about a fire that started down in Morris County just about a quarter of a mile south of the county line and with the winds today, this thing moved north real fast. It jumped two roadways, one a blacktop major roadway… We’ve lost two buildings in the process- a garage and an old hay shed were the two structures that we lost along with numerous bales of hay out here on this hay meadows,” said Major Tony Wolf with the Geary County Sheriff’s Office.

“We’ve been out here all afternoon. We’ve had firefighters from all surroundings townships and areas and fire districts. Even Fort Riley’s come out here and helped us with their big tankers to haul water. Everybody’s worked great together. It’s been a team effort. The conditions have been the worst thing that we’ve had to fight against. The dry, dry conditions and the high winds. This fire has moved very fast on us. We were able to get it stopped but it’s been a major undertaking,” Wolf added.

There were no injuries.

Firefighters managed to keep the flames from spreading to a number of nearby houses.

It is unknown what sparked the fire.
