JUNCTION CITY, Kan. (WIBW) -- State officials with the Department for Children and Families (DCF) made their way to different towns Friday, meeting with local staff members and community leaders.

DCF Secretary Phyllis Gilmore and other agency officials met with DCF field staff and city officials in Manhattan, Junction City and Salina on August 31, 2012.

The meetings were an effort to connect with local employees and leaders in the various towns, hear their concerns and introduce the mission and goals of the new Department of Children and Families.

In July, the agency transitioned from the Department of Social and Rehabilitation Services to the Department of Children and Families, more centrally focused on the well being of children and families in Kansas. The Disability and Behavioral Health Services division of SRS, as well as oversight of the five state hospitals moved to the newly named Department for Aging and Disability Services.

The DCF retained its children and adult protection services, adoption services, foster care support, child support services, welfare and food assistance programs, as well as services dedicated to vocational rehabilitation, among others.

Secretary Gilmore was joined by the Deputy Secretary for Family Services Kathe Decker and the program directors in the Family Services division.

“We wanted to get out and meet staff and hear their concerns out in the regions and wanted to be able to meet people firsthand so we decided to get a bus and all climb aboard and here we are… It’s been very enlightening and very educational thus far to hear some of the thoughts particularly as it relates to Fort Riley. There’s been considerable information imparted that I am really glad to hear. We’ll have several meetings and connect with Fort Riley and see what we can do to improve services for military families and to take some of the burden off of the staff here in Junction City,” Gilmore said.
