TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW)-Topekans from all cultures, backgrounds, and denominations, gathered at El Shaddai Ministries Church in a joint effort to bring communities together and transform Topeka.

Pastor Tom Watson of El Shaddai Ministries said, "Its one of the great things happening is we see the unification of people crossing denominational lines and ethnic groups and just addressing issues important to the community and important to the faith community as well."

More than 400 clergy and church members discussed the importance of issues like youth mentoring and education in public schools.

Although Tom pointed out the difficulties of changing Topeka overnight, the strong support from Topeka churches and concerned citizens tells him they are headed in the right direction.

Just seeing this great group come together I think throughout my time I've seen people come together, but never to the extent that we see here tonight."

The training will lead to forming a new organization with the mission of bringing churches together to address issues of justice in Topeka. Event organizers expect to launch the new organization in the spring of 2013
