(Topeka, Kan) Christmas Bureau has made significant strides in adopting families this week, but 229 remain on the waiting list.

To date, Christmas Bureau has connected more than 2,600 families in need with generous adopters in our community.

“Of the 229 families still available, we have several ‘types’ of families that we are pushing to get adopted,” said Tom Baumgartner, volunteer engagement director for United Way. “Many of the families that remain on the list are harder to find adopters for, but we believe everyone, regardless of their economic hardship, deserves something on Christmas morning.”

Of the 229 families on the list, the following “types” of families have the highest number available:

· 2 adults, 3 children: 19 families available

· 2 adults, 4 children: 39 families available

· 1 adult (most remaining are homebound and/or disabled): 81 available

· 2 adults: 37 families available

Adopting a family is easy. Requests to adopt can be made online at by submitting an online form or by calling (785) 273.4804. Once the application to adopt is received by United Way, volunteers will work to match the adopter with a family in need. Family information will be sent to the adopter by fax or email within two business days. Once the adopter receives their family information, they are asked to contact them right away to let them know they have been adopted. Next, they shop for, wrap and deliver gifts.

Suggested costs to adopt a family vary based on family size. United Way provides a cost table as a guideline on how much to spend per family. It includes a gift of $30 value to each individual plus food for a holiday meal. Meal costs are estimated at $25 for the first person plus $5 for each additional person in the family. Adopting a family of three will cost approximately $125.

United Way is also accepting monetary donations for those who want to help but do not have the time ability to privately adopt. Checks should be made to United Way with “Christmas Bureau” written in the memo or be paid by credit card either online at, by phone (785) 273.4804 or in person at United Ways offices.

Christmas Bureau, which is in its 70th year, held Intake for families needing assistance from Nov. 4 – Nov. 12 at Let’s Help and the Antioch Family Life Center. During Intake, hundreds of volunteers dedicated thousands of hours to help families complete the application process. Families that qualified for assistance completed a thorough intake process which reviewed income documentation and verified identification for each person in the household.
