TOPEKA, Kan. – City of Topeka officials are excited to announce the hiring of the City’s first-ever Bikeways Planner. Julie Anderson joined the City’s team this week as a Planner I, to lead the charge on multi-modal transportation planning.

Anderson will spend half her time working as a transit planner with the Topeka Metropolitan Transit Authority, and the other half with the City’s Planning Department, coordinating implementation of the Topeka Bikeways Master Plan.

“This new position proves our community’s commitment to sustainability,” Planning Director Bill Fiander said. “Julie’s skill, along with the adoption of the Bikeways Master Plan and complete streets policy last year, will allow the City to increase transportation connectivity, capacity, and choices for all citizens.”

Anderson earned her Bachelor of Arts in Film Studies from University of Utah in 2007. She then moved to New York and fell in love with transit and non-vehicular transportation choices. She went back to the University of Utah, where in 2012 she earned a Master in City and Metropolitan Planning, with an emphasis in transportation planning. Anderson also worked for Bountiful City, Utah, in zoning code administration and for Morgan County, Utah, where she prepared a transit study.

The bikeways/transit planner position is funded 80% with federal highway and transit grants, and 20% through the TMTA.

Anderson will coordinate the activities of the bikeways advisory committee to assist the implementation of the Bikeways Master Plan. The plan was approved by the governing body under Resolution 8426 on May 8, 2012. Anderson will be directly supervised by Carlton Scroggins, Transportation Planning/MTPO Manager.

Unlike trails, bikeways are bike lanes and routes on City streets.
