"Bike & Build" Riders Make Stop In Manhattan

MANHATTAN, Kan. (WIBW) -- Members of a national charitable group are making their way across the country to raise awareness for their cause and on Friday, they made a stop in the Little Apple.

A group of more than 30 cyclists with an organization called “Bike & Build” started their cross country trip on the east coast back in May and are en route to Oregon.

Along the way, they’re stopping to help work on Habitat for Humanity home building projects in an effort to benefit the affordable housing cause in the United States.

On Friday, they had their bikes worked on at Big Poppi’s Bicycle Company in Manhattan’s Aggieville district.

“It’s a great combination of both exercise and community service in one. We’re young people and we have the voice, we have the ability to use bicycles as our vehicle to get the word out about something that’s so near and dear to our hearts,” said Emily Uperti, a “Bike & Build” rider.

The cyclists, ranging in age from 18 to 27, plan to make it to Oregon on August 8, 2012.

The riders say they’ve been starting their days very early to avoid the heat.
