Christmas Bureau Spreading Holiday Cheer to Those in Need

TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) – This Christmas, the United Way of Greater Topeka and Majic 107.7 KAMJ-FM, need your help to make the holiday special for area families.

They have again partnered to help 2,900 families and households celebrate the holiday through the Christmas Bureau adoption program.

Anyone in the community can “adopt” one of the remaining 1,300 families, providing them with gifts and food for Christmas.

Kathy Busch, the Director of the Volunteer Center with the United Way, said that a gift of $160 provides a family of four with food and gifts.

But, Busch also said there are senior citizens on fixed incomes, a long with other single individuals, many with disabilities who can be helped through the Christmas Bureau’s adoption program.

This year in harder economic times, organizers said many of the families and individuals aren’t asking for toys or big items, but simply just for the necessities.

"Many of these families are asking for things like food for their kids. They're asking for gas cards so they can get their kids to school, they're asking for blankets, it's very basic stuff. And a lot of people who came this year, never had to ask for help before,” Busch said.

Wednesday and Thursday from 7 a.m. until 7 p.m. volunteers like Claire Chisholm are accepting calls at (785) 270-0989, to adopt these families.

Chisholm has been volunteering with the Christmas Bureau for more than four years now, and she said she doesn’t know why anyone wouldn’t want to help others in need.

"I believe that if you've been blessed, we've all been blessed to bless someone else. It could be us, we don't know that, next year it could be us."
