GARDEN CITY, Kan. (AP) _ Garden City's Fourth of July 2011
Freedom Parade has been scrubbed.
The Garden City Telegram reports the event was canceled because
there weren't enough entries.
Beverly Schmitz Glass, executive director of Downtown Vision,
said the decision was difficult in part because Garden City has
also cancelled its fireworks display this year. Many southwest
Kansas communities are forgoing fireworks on the Fourth because of
the hot, dry conditions in the region.
Glass says the lack of parade entries may have been because many
residents were taking advantage of the three-day weekend and
The Municipal Band still is set to play its traditional
patriotic concert in Stevens Park at noon on July 4.
