DC Bound

A local teacher is headed to Washington to accept a national honor.

Royal Valley Middle School's Nathan McAllister was awarded the Gilder Lehrman Institute's 2010 Kansas State "Preserve America" National History teacher of the year award.

He's been teaching history for more than 10 years.

McAllister will join state winners in wWashington, DC next month to accept his award for outstanding teaching skills.

In addition to the DC trip, McAllister can take two of his students and receives $10,000.

McAllister recently led his students efforts to have state lawmakers designate a trail honoring abolitionist James Lane.
