Katrina Evacuees Still Nestled In Their Topeka Home

Immediately following Hurricane Katrina there were hundreds of stories of loss and grief stricken families.

One family found their way to the Capitol City.

5 years ago this weekend, Hurricane Katrina slammed into the gulf coast, destroying homes, and changing lives.

For the Martinez family, the long road back led them far away from home .

The Martinez family have no intentions of moving back to the place they used to call home... hundreds of miles away in New Orleans, Louisiana.

Shortly after the storm the family was bussed to Oklahoma City and then to Kansas City where they were told a generous man, Charles Moor, was going to provide them with a home.

They've been in here ever since.

Carlos Martinez continues to pursue his jazz career and Latifa Martinez has been working as a homeschool teacher in Topeka.
