Special Deliveries

From the young to the young at heart..nutritional meals are a vital part of life and thats what one senator and the USDA undersecretary for food, nutrition and consumer services were in the Capitol City to promote.

Not only did the USDA Undersecretary congratulate Logan Elementary school students for their school lunch program but he teamed up with Senator Pat Roberts to deliver meals to homebound seniors in the capital city.

Meals on wheels was making the rounds with 2 volunteers these folks weren't expecting.

Senator Pat Roberts invited USDA undersecretary Kevin Concannon to see the impact of meals on wheels on local communities.

Programs like Meals on Wheels rely on both surplus and bonus commodities to better serve our nations seniors.

Last year, food nutrition services decided that senior nutrition programs would no longer receive bonus commodities.

This past June USDA responded that they would give bonus comodities to senior nutrition programs only after higher priority nutritional programs.

as the delivery route came to an end it was time for under secretary canconnon to visit a younger generation at Logan Elementary school to commend them for their healthy eating habits.

The award is part of First Lady Michelle Obama's "Lets Move" campaign and recognizes schools for serving healthy meals.

The end goal? No senior goes hungry and kids are eating healthy.
