Big Brothers, Big Sisters Recognizes Its Volunteers

TOPEKA -- Big Brothers Big Sisters recently hosted a volunteer appreciation party for community volunteers who provide support to the agency all year long. Refreshments and live music were enjoyed by over 100 dedicated volunteers and their guests.

“Volunteers are the backbone of our organization,” said Nancy Daniels, Executive Director. “We could not provide these valuable services and make a positive impact on the lives of nearly 600 children each year if it were not for our caring volunteers.”

During the event Sheldon Warmington was named Big Brother of the Year for the Community Based program. His little brother nominated him saying, “He is the best Big I could ever imagine.” Sheldon and his little have been matched for nearly three years. Greg Allen received Big Brother of the Year for the Site-Based program. Crystal Scott who has been matched with her little since 2004 was named Community Based Big Sister of the Year. Peggy Hansen-Nagy received Big Sister of the year for the Site-Based program and has been with her little since 2009.

Nominees included:
Big Sister of the Year nominees: Katherine Kotsch, Evy Struttman and Rhiannon Haskin. Big Brother of the Year nominees: Gerald Franklin, James Stemmons, Cody Purney, Greg Lee and Mike Stock.

Children in the Big Brothers Big Sisters program were given the opportunity to nominate their Big by writing a letter about why their Big should be selected.
