Taking on Sugar

By now, you've probably heard about New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg's proposal to ban the sale of large-sized sugary drinks, like soda pop, sports drinks and pre-sweetened iced tea. His goal is to take a step in the fight against obesity.

The question is whether it goes too far or whether it really does anything at all.

Bloomberg's proposal calls for cups and bottles of sweetened drinks to be limited to 16 ounces or less. It would not apply to diet soda, fruit juices, dairy-based drinks or alocholic beverages. There also are expceptions for grocery stores and convenience stores. As for fast-food restaurants where drinks are self-serve, they'd have to hand out cups that are 16 ounces. However, people could still refill that cup as often as they wish. At other locations, you could buy several of the smaller-sized drinks if you wished.

Which is why I ask - does the proposal go too far or does it really do anything at all? What do you think?
