Should "EMAW" Be Saved?

by Melissa Brunner

The controversy started showing up in snippets on Facebook and Twitter last week. Over the weekend, it gained more steam - or maybe that's just because I follow @LifeofFitz on Twitter!

It seems that brimming under the surface for several years now has been a sentiment that K-State's "EMAW" slogan is sexist. It stand for Every Man a Wildcat. Some would like to see that changed to "EPAW" - Every Person a Wildcat. Adding fuel to the fire over the weekend, according to the K-State Collegian, was when the K-State Marching Band took its "EMAW" formation out of the pre-game routine. Here's a link to the Collegian's latest article on the issue: http://www.kstatecollegian.com/news/save-emaw-goes-viral-1.2630217

The arguments on both sides remind me of when I was in college and Marquette University made the transition from the Warriors nickname to Golden Eagles. While some of the outlying issues may differ, at the core is a fundamental question: Should what is offensive to some be removed for all? If the answer is yes, then how far down the slope do we go?

I'm interested in hearing your thoughts. Debate away!
