I love breakfast food! A ham and cheese omlet with a big side of hashbrowns is probably my favorite. Unfortunately, I don't indulge in that very often because, probably fortunately, my husband isn't a fan of eggs and it seems rude to serve him up a bowl of cold cereal while I cook a big breakfast for myself. He is, however, a big booster of pancakes and waffles - and I sure won't complain about cooking those up for a treat some mornings! (I draw the line at bacon - I love the stuff, but, if it's in the house I'll want to eat it every morning!) I also love those huge blueberry muffins, like you'll find at Perkins! I try to reason that the blueberries make it okay because of all the antioxidents they pack (when they're not baked into a sugary sweet treat!) Our usual breakfast? A bowl of cereal with skim milk. I admit - it is usually a sugary cereal - oops!
How about breakfast on the go? I came across an article on Yahoo! today from the editors of Real Age. It runs down five fast food breakfast options - and offers healthier options. Read the list and you'll realize they're big fans of oatmeal! Here's the quick look:
Instead of Starbucks' Zucchini Walnut Muffin, choose the Strawberry & Blueberry Yogurt Parfait or Perfect Oatmeal.
Instead of McDonald's Big Breakfast with Hotcakes, choose Fruit & Maple Oatmeal or an Egg McMuffin without cheese.
Instead of Subway's Breakfast B.M.T. Melt, choose the Black Forest Ham, Egg & Cheese -- on a muffin with an egg white.
You can read their notes on two other locations and further nutrition info comparing the bad and not-so-bad choices at this link, http://shine.yahoo.com/healthy-living/5-worst-fast-food-breakfasts-order-instead-192000582.html. It's a little food for thought next time you're staring down the cinnamon rolls!
