One day last December, Atchison Police Sgt. David Enzbrenner left for work and never came home.
On that day, Sgt. Enzbrenner became the 267th Kansas Law Enforcement Officer killed in the line of duty.
Certainly, for any of us, this day could be our last. However, the odds are a bit higher when it is your job to come face to face with those most of us hope to never meet. They knock on a door not knowing what's on the other side; they walk down an alley not knowing who might be hiding around the corner.
The state of Kansas honored its fallen officers Friday with a ceremony at the Statehouse. Sgt. Enzbrenner's name was the 267th added to a memorial bearing the names of each of our state's fallen officers.
Next time you see a law enforcement officer - or a firefighter or a service member - thank them for their service.
And say a prayer that this day will not be their last - that we will not have to add name 268.
