Voicing a Goal

by Melissa Brunner

There's something about voicing a goal out loud that makes me feel that much more accountable to it. Such is the case with my plans for Saturday, October 5th, when I line up for the Run for a Reason half marathon, benefiting the YWCA's Girls on the Run program.

I spent a along time hedging on this one. I've been pretty regular about training this summer and have steadily built distance. But I never actually registered, hence, giving myself an out.

No more! The form is submitted and I now say I AM running a half marathon this fall! Not only that, I signed my husband up for it, since I've been dragging him out early Sunday mornings for the long runs!

I am excited about the prospect of pushing myself in order to reach the finish line. It's not just the physical aspect of running 13.1 mile, but also the mental challenge of not letting doubt creep into your mind, of feeling like you can't take another step but persevering to reach the goal.

It's what makes Girls on the Run the perfect beneficiary of this endeavor. The program is a simple enough concept in that it is a running program for girls in grades 3 through 7. But, through running, the girls build confidence and recognize their inner strength.

The Run for a Reason also has a 5k option, and many of the girls in the program will participate. It is one of many finish lines they'll strive to reach in their lives. For those who've never run three blocks, much less three miles, they'll find themselves realizing that, "hey, if I made it through this, imagine what else I can do!"

If you aren't able to run, come on out and hang around the finish line or along the route to cheer and provide encouragement as runners work toward their goals, one step at a time.

Run for a Reason is Saturday, Oct. 5. The run begins and ends near the YWCA, SW 12th and Van Buren. Find details and a course map at www.ywcatopeka.org
