Finish Line Reached!

by Melissa Brunner

Whew! Saturday morning dawned with sunny skies and pleasant temps - a much better day for a run than the rain that was predicted earlier in the week. I know we need rain, but sure wanted it to hold off until after I ran the Run for a Reason half-marathon!

About 200 people lined up at Hummer Park as the sun was just finishing its journey into the sky at 7:30 am. A little more than half were running the 5k, the rest of us were set for 13.1 miles. It was a great route around the city, setting off south toward the KNI grounds, winding around on a path that connected to the Shunga Trail, then following Shunga east toward Adams/Branner and back over to Hummer Park along 1st Street. The first seven miles felt great! Around that point, my husband caught up with me to snap a picture and I half-way cheerily informed him, "More than halfway there!"

Soon after, though, I felt myself start to slow. But I started to think about people I know who aren't able to even attempt what I was doing - my friend, Sarah, for example, lost a friend to MD the week before; and my nephew has friend with NF who lost her leg to the disease. Those thoughts buoyed me for the next couple miles. But around mile 10, my legs were protesting! The next time I saw my husband along the route I couldn't muster the chipperness of our previous enounter! Still, I kept telling myself MacVicar wasn't too far away! I trudged those last three miles, but I made it to the finish line at 2:06:30. It was about eight minutes slower than my first half marathon, so no personal record - but still the personal satisfaction of meeting my goal to make it to the finish!

Will there be a third? Who knows! The next day, a running pal hit a 1:45 personal record in the Wichita half marathon, so part of me is motivated to see if I could get serious and do better. As long as I keep getting out there on a regular basis, I'm happy!

Here's the pic Doug snapped of me "chugging along" as I passed the train at the Expocentre!
