Be Sure to Thank Your Service Workers

by Melissa Brunner

Ralph and I had the opportunity Tuesday to host an event in which we're pleaded to have been included since its inception. The Topeka Lodging Association, for the seventh year, handed out awards to area hotel workers.

Think about it. When you go to a hotel, you expect the bed will be made, you'll find fresh towels in the bathroom and the complimentary breakfast area fully stocked. But how often have you thanked the people responsible for those comforts? How much more likely would you be to complain about those items if they weren't up to par? It's okay to admit it - it's just our human nature.

The Topeka Lodging Association established these awards as a way to thank those who do these tasks that often go unnoticed. Hotel owners and managers nominate their employees, from the maintenance person to the housekeepers and front desk clerks. The nominees then are invited to a luncheon - yes, they are treated to the type of lunch usually reserved for the bosses! The winners are applauded before a roomful of peers and receive a plaque recognizing their achievements.

I love being able to show these workers how valuable they are. Without their dedication and excellance, Topeka would not have a convention and tourism industry. Great recruiters and brainstormers and managers are one thing, but, if you don't have quality people to do the front-line work and do it well, you can't follow through on your promises.

Hats off to this year's winners and nominees and all of their colleagues doing their jobs day in and day out. Please know your efforts are appreciated.
